Welcome to the website of the Brighton & District Province of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes. A Brief History Of Our Province:In 1922 Brothers Joseph Monk, Ernest Lewery and Hooper Marchant of the Brighton and District Buffs applied to Grand Lodge to be allowed to form their own Province. This resulted in The Grand Lodge of England issuing a Warrant for the Brighton & District Provincial Grand Lodge which was inaugurated on the 16th February 1922. Bro Joseph Monk was elected as the first Provincial Grand Primo of the Province, he was further elected as Chief Officer again in 1929 and 1936. Bro Ernest Lewery was elected Deputy Provincial grand Primo in 1922 and the third founder member of the Province Bro Hooper Marchant was the first Provincial Grand Secretary. The Province stretches from the quiet shores of the River Arun at Littlehampton in the west along the East and West Sussex coast to Eastbourne, and now to the north of the county upto Crawley, with 1 Lodge meeting in Littlehampton and 1 in Durrington every Tuesday. Further east in Hove 2 weekly Lodges meet 1 on Monday and the other on Wednesday night, In Brighton 1 Lodge meets weekly on Sunday evening, in Newhaven and Eastbourne Lodges meet every Wednesday evening. On the 1st July 2008 the Mid-Sussex Province amalgamated with the Province and now the Maplegreen Lodge meets in Dial Post on a Monday, the New Crawley Lodge meets in Crawley also on a Monday and the Horsted Keynes Memorial Lodge meets on a Tuesday in Handcross just of the A23. The Province now covers almost all areas of East & West Sussex, and not just as it was along the coastal strip. Our ROH Assembly meets January, April, July and October on the 4th Thursday from Portslade and our Knights Chapter meets monthly on the 3rd Thursday also in Portslade. There are many places to visit within the Province area from the historic Arundel Castle, The Southdowns Way for those who like a walk, at Devils Dyke the views are outstanding, to shopping in the Lanes in Brighton, the peaceful Harbour Town of Newhaven along the coast to Beachy Head and Eastbourne. As you can see all our Lodges either meet in or close to seaside towns or cities and we do have visitors who tend to bring their fishing tackle when they visit. A warm welcome awaits all visitors to our Lodges |
